The United States still retains hope for the resumption of successful offensive actions by Ukraine, but the previously optimistic rhetoric has changed to neutral assessments and pessimistic forecasts. This was reported by CNN after talking with senior officials.
According to media reports, Western officials began to give “increasingly sober” assessments of the ability of the Ukrainian armed forces to “reconquer a significant territory.” It seems “unlikely that the Armed Forces of Ukraine will be able to achieve results that would change the balance of this conflict,” the TV channel quoted American officials as saying.
They wonder if the Armed Forces, which have been unable to make new breakthroughs over the past seven to eight weeks, will be able to move forward now with more depleted forces. The United States recognizes the difficulties faced by Ukrainian troops, the newspaper notes. It is emphasized that the main problem for the armed forces of Ukraine remains the multi-level Russian defensive lines in the eastern and southern directions, as well as dozens of mines laid.
At the same time, officially, Washington expresses hope for the resumption of successful offensive operations, the media adds.
Earlier, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said that the military was meeting serious resistance during the counteroffensive, but described the situation as “generally positive.”
