The measure was taken as part of strengthening the existing tactical formations on the eastern flank of NATO, the minister said. He clarified that the battalion will be located in the area of the city of Augustow, in the north-east of Poland. It will be created by the end of 2023. The battalion will be part of the 15th Gizhitsky mechanized brigade, which is part of the 16th mechanized division.
The Suwalki Corridor is a section of territory about 100 km long, along which the border between Poland and Lithuania passes. It is also called the “land corridor” with the Kaliningrad and Grodno regions of Russia and Belarus.
It should be noted that Poland began to strengthen its eastern borders after reports that the forces of the Wagner PMC are planning to redeploy Belarus. As previously reported, Wagner units were located in a camp in the Belarusian village of Tsel — 20 km from the town of Osipovichi.
