A group of Russian senators came up with a proposal to extend the mechanism of termination of citizenship in a number of cases to persons who acquired it by birth. As noted in the explanatory note to the relevant bill, the law “On Citizenship of the Russian Federation” provides for cases of its termination for actions that pose a threat to national security.
So, citizenship can be deprived for desertion, for discrediting the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, for calls for extremism.
At the same time, it is noted that these cases of termination of citizenship do not apply to persons who have acquired citizenship by birth or on the basis of recognition as a citizen of the Russian Federation, and also apply to persons who are recognized as Russian citizens on the basis of federal constitutional law. The draft law proposes to extend in these cases the termination of citizenship, including to persons who acquired citizenship by birth or on the basis of recognition as a citizen of the Russian Federation.
Meanwhile, Andrey Klishas, head of the Federation Council Committee on Constitutional Legislation and State Building, said that he would advise his colleagues who submitted the above bill to the State Duma to read the Constitution of the Russian Federation, TASS reports.
