Half of Europeans may face a high risk of heat stress in the summer by 2050, said Roman Vilfand, scientific director of the Hydrometeorological Center, citing research by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

According to the meteorologist, the intensity and duration of heat waves will increase, TASS reports.

Vilfand recalled that currently in Italy, Greece, Turkey, Spain, France there is a very high temperature, weekly figures in southern Europe and the Mediterranean are 5-9 degrees above the norm. “Such weather is super-dangerous for humans, as not only dehydration occurs, but also a change in the chemical composition in the human body,” added Vilfand. He stressed that in such conditions the body does not have the opportunity to rest from the heat even at night.

The meteorologist added that a red alert level has been declared in Spain and Italy. According to him, new temperature records can be set in North America.

Recall that this summer the average temperature on the planet has already updated its historical maximum three times, and last June became the hottest month in Europe on record.
