Ukraine may receive American F-16 fighter jets by the end of 2023, John Kirby, strategic communications coordinator at the White House National Security Council, said on Fox News.
However, he noted that the fighters themselves would not change the course of hostilities. “What they really need is artillery, ammunition, air defense and armor – tanks. And on all four counts, we delivered an incredible amount of help and, quite frankly, at an unprecedented rate,” Kirby said.
Recall that at the NATO summit in Vilnius in mid-July, more than a dozen countries – Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, Canada, Luxembourg, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Sweden, Great Britain – created a coalition to train Ukrainian pilots to fly the F-16. Later, the White House reported that US President Joe Biden approved the training of pilots and other personnel from Ukraine to work with the F-16 in European countries. At the same time, there was no talk of transferring these fighters to Ukraine in the near future.
