The Russian Foreign Ministry’s interpretation of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Azerbaijan “is unacceptable in the context of the fact that Karabakh is recognized as an integral part of Azerbaijan.” This was stated in the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry, accusing Moscow of violating the Declaration on Allied Cooperation between the two countries.
“The statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation dated June 15, 2023, commenting on the tripartite statement and the peace process, causes bewilderment and disappointment,” the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said in a statement. It emphasizes that “the statement does not comply with the Declaration on Allied Cooperation between Azerbaijan and Russia and the speeches of Russian President Vladimir Putin, which support the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Azerbaijan, including the Karabakh region.”
The statement also states that the Azerbaijani side is taking practical steps aimed at promoting a peace treaty between Baku and Yerevan, and “attempts to politicize the issue and statements about the allegedly tense humanitarian situation in the region have no grounds.”
Recall, on July 15, the Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement “in connection with the situation around Nagorno-Karabakh”, in which it recalled that in October Armenia recognized Nagorno-Karabakh as part of the territory of Azerbaijan.
The Declaration on Allied Cooperation between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Azerbaijan was signed by Presidents Vladimir Putin and Ilham Aliyev on February 22, 2022.
