Participants of the NATO summit in Vilnius discussed withdrawing the invitation to Ukraine to become a member of the alliance. The reason was the post of President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, in which he criticized Western countries for indecision, writes The Washington Post (WP) citing unnamed sources.
On July 11, Ukraine’s leader criticized NATO, noting that the bloc had not set a time frame for either inviting Kiev to the alliance or for the country’s membership itself, which he said was “unprecedented and absurd.” The post, according to the publication, “infuriated members of the US delegation who came to the summit,” who held informal talks about how the alliance should respond. Allegedly, the question of “reviewing or closing” the issue of inviting Ukraine to NATO was raised, the media points out. According to him, it was planned to remove the reference to the “invitation” or find another place for this word in the final communiqué of the summit. As a result, it was decided that editing the document would delay its publication, and the text remained as originally drafted.
Recall that following the results of the two-day NATO summit held on July 11-12, the G7 countries signed a declaration on Ukraine’s security guarantees, and also simplified the procedure for obtaining membership and announced the creation of the Ukraine-NATO Council.
