A group of scientists from the University of Washington managed to create lollipops that not only do not cause cavities, but also help solve the problem of sensitive enamel. They, in particular, have developed a way to restore damaged enamel with the help of special lollipops. The results of their work have been published in ACS Biomaterials Science & Engineering.

Note that pain occurs when acids, such as those produced by the breakdown of sugar by saliva, gradually wear down tooth enamel and destroy the protection of underlying tissues. The human body is not able to restore enamel. Therefore, the researchers developed a special protein chain – sADP5. This chain is able to capture calcium and phosphate ions that make up the dental mineral and use it to create new mineral microlayers.

As a result, the gaps in the enamel disappear, being filled with these layers. Nerves and blood vessels receive a new protective layer, and the teeth no longer cause discomfort. True, it is worth remembering that it is not a full-fledged replacement for enamel, although it is not afraid of high temperatures and mechanical damage.

In preclinical trials, this protein chain was introduced into flavored calcium phosphate core lozenges. In the future, the peptide can be added to any oral care product, such as toothpaste or rinse.
