President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky considers the results of the NATO summit for Kyiv good, but not ideal. According to Kommersant, at a press conference with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, Zelensky stressed that security guarantees for the G7 countries should be “not instead of NATO membership, but on Ukraine’s path to NATO.”
According to the Ukrainian President, today the G7 must confirm these guarantees.
Zelensky noted that the results of the summit are very good, but if Kyiv received an invitation to NATO, they “would be ideal.” He added that the country’s integration into the alliance is being delayed because “no one wants to unleash a world war.”
As for the transfer of cluster munitions to Kyiv, Zelenskiy called it a matter of “justice” and “protection.”
In turn, Stoltenberg said that the victory of Russia in the conflict with Ukraine on the battlefield would be a tragedy for Kyiv, and the alliance would make it more vulnerable.
Recall, the day before, Volodymyr Zelensky said that the NATO statement following the summit in Vilnius would not contain any specifics about Ukraine’s entry into the alliance. He called for respect for Ukraine and suggested that Ukraine’s membership in the alliance becomes a bargaining chip during negotiations with Russia.
The NATO summit started the day before, on July 11, in Vilnius, it will last two days. At the end of the first day, the countries of the alliance stated that Ukraine would not need to fulfill the Membership Action Plan for Euro-Atlantic integration. An invitation to NATO will be sent when the member countries “agree, and Ukraine fulfills the conditions.”
