Russia is taking adequate steps due to the entry of Sweden and Finland into NATO. This was stated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
“We will draw conclusions depending on how quickly and how deeply NATO will develop the territory of Finland and Sweden. There is no doubt that they are going to do this, both Helsinki and Stockholm are already discussing with the United States many issues related to the deployment of the alliance’s infrastructure right on the borders with the Russian Federation in the case of Finland, and very close to our borders in the case of Sweden,” Lavrov said at a press conference following talks with Omani Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad al-Busaidi, quoted by Kommersant.
The minister added that “all the legitimate interests of the Russian Federation in the field of security will be ensured.” He did not specify what specific response actions and measures the Russian authorities are going to take.
Recall that Sweden applied for NATO membership together with Finland after the start of a special operation in Ukraine. Finland quickly joined the alliance, and Sweden’s bid was not supported by Türkiye and Hungary. On July 10, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that he was ready to agree on Sweden’s entry into NATO, but set his own conditions.
