The Prosecutor General’s Office of Berlin has charged a Russian citizen with attempted murder, who, according to it, tried to set fire to the RIA Novosti office in the city in 2022, according to the website of the prosecutor’s office.
The Russian was charged on June 20, but the materials were published only now. A 55-year-old Russian citizen is charged with attempted murder and attempted arson.
The prosecutor’s office believes that in April 2022, a man planted an incendiary device in the basement of an apartment building where employees of the “Russian news agency” were located. However, when the man decided to commit arson, the device did not work. A few days later, he was found in the basement of the house and neutralized by the police.
In December 2022, the man was placed under arrest. According to the prosecutor’s office, prior to his arrest, the accused “had spoken negatively about the Russian authorities.” The Russian is also suspected of illegally receiving assistance from the state for patients with covid. In addition, he is accused of manipulating the gas and energy supply in a rented apartment.
The man denies his guilt in each of the listed crimes and claims that he “became a victim of the intrigue of the Russian special services,” the prosecutor’s office added.
