Three detainees during an operation that achieved the seizure of 275 archaeological and paleontological pieces in Riobamba

Police chief commented that the objects that were recovered have great importance at a scientific, cultural and, therefore, economic level.

Three individuals apprehended and the seizure of 275 objects that would belong to the National Cultural Heritage were the results of the Cillón de los Andes Valdivia 40 operation, carried out last Monday.

Colonel Ernesto Pérez, commander (s) of Subzone 6 of the Chimborazo National Police, said that the operation was carried out by the National Investigation Directorate of the Judicial Police through the National Unit for Investigation of Crimes Against the Right to Law. Culture, in the provinces of Pichincha, Tungurahua and Chimborazo.

After the investigative tasks, The Police with the support of the Prosecutor’s Office determined that in two buildings in the center of Riobamba they had been storing and selling the goodsTherefore, after the search warrants, the places were intervened.

He commented that the objects that were recovered have great importance at a scientific, cultural and, therefore, economic level. Due to the visual characteristics, according to the police chief, these are articles that belong to the national and international cultural heritage.

For his part, Major Patricio Gaibor, a member of the National Unit for the Investigation of Crimes Against the Right to Culture, attached to the National Directorate of Investigation of the Judicial Police, said that the operation had the participation of Public Prosecutor’s Office personnel. and it was possible to apprehend a person identified with the initials SFJW, 49 years old, with a record for the crime of theft, and CCEY (47) and RSH (56), without judicial records. Two were arrested in Pichincha and one in Tungurahua.

As evidence, 275 objects were recovered that are classified between archaeological and paleontological assets.

Said objects will be submitted to the pertinent examinations by the archaeologists of the National Institute of Cultural Heritage in order to verify their originality and their cultural affiliation to be returned to the State.

Gaibor assured that the detainees could face a custodial sentence of 5 to 7 years for the alleged crime of trafficking in heritage assets, and 7 to 10 years in the case of paleontological archaeological assets, in accordance with Article 238 of the Code. Organic Integral Penal (COIP).

In the intervened places in Riobamba, it was also possible to determine three elements of the wild fauna that will be delivered to the Ministry of the Environment so that the corresponding procedure can be carried out. (I)
