The Afghan authorities explained the decision to ban the work of women’s beauty salons in the country by the desire to preserve the family budget of ordinary Afghans. According to TASS with reference to a local publication, this was stated by a representative of the Ministry of Islamic Appeal, Orientation, Command of the Good and Prohibition of the Reprehensible, formed by the radical Taliban movement (The Taliban, a terrorist movement banned in Russia – ed. ed.), Akif Muhajir.
In his opinion, the Afghans’ costs for such salons have become “exorbitant”, and this, he argues, is an unnecessary “waste”. Also, the official added, eyebrow shaping and hair extensions practiced in salons “contradict Sharia.”
The decision to close women’s beauty salons in the country caused a negative reaction in the Afghan society. Thus, TASS recalls, the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan called on the Taliban to reconsider the decision, noting that this new restriction of women’s rights will negatively affect the country’s economy and contradicts the Taliban’s declared support for women’s entrepreneurship.
