The Russian consulate in Turku may be closed. This was stated by Finnish President Sauli Niinistö.
He explained that the decision could be made in response to the expulsion of Finnish diplomats and the closure of the Consulate General in St. Petersburg, he was quoted by RIA Novosti.
Earlier it was reported that the Russian authorities are expelling 9 Finnish diplomats from the country. The decision was taken as a response to the confrontational policy of the Finnish authorities, the Russian Foreign Ministry said. Also, from October 1, the Russian Federation withdraws its consent to the activities of the Consulate General of Finland in St. Petersburg.
The day before, the Finnish Ambassador to Moscow, Antti Helanterya, was summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry. He was strongly protested because of the “anti-Russian policy of Helsinki,” said the official representative of the department, Maria Zakharova. She explained that the tightening of the entry regime for Russians announced by the Finnish authorities will not only be evaluated in Brussels, Washington and Kyiv, it will be taken into account in Moscow when planning further policy in the Finnish direction.
