French President Emmanuel Macron intends to impose financial penalties on the families of young people involved in public disorder, reports France24.

“It is necessary that, at the first violation, we can simply financially punish families,” the publication quotes the words of the president during a meeting with representatives of the police brigade to combat crime (BAC). The meeting was not announced and took place on Tuesday night in a cafe in the north of Paris. The head of state expressed support for the police forces after several days of unrest in the cities of France.

According to Le Parisien, although the last nights in France have been calm, Macron does not believe that “everything is over.” The President urged law enforcement forces to “remain at maximum readiness.”

The riots in France began after a policeman shot and killed a 17-year-old teenager who, while driving a car, refused to stop at the request of law enforcement officers. The incident stirred up the whole country and provoked a wave of nighttime riots in many cities. During the week, according to the French Ministry of the Interior, 3,486 people were detained, of which 1,366 were in the Paris region. 5,892 cars were burned, 1,105 buildings were damaged by arson or pogroms. More than 800 policemen and gendarmes were wounded.
