The volume of cash in Russians decreased by 17.8 billion rubles

According to the results of the first quarter of this year, the volume of cash foreign currency in the hands of Russians decreased by 17.8 billion rubles, follows from statistics published by the Central Bank of the Russian Federation.

At the same time, the amount of cash in rubles increased by 300.6 billion rubles (in the fourth quarter of last year, the growth was 1.2 trillion rubles). In total, by April, cash accounted for 17% of household financial assets (22.5 trillion rubles). Most of the household assets were shares and other forms of equity (35.3%, or 46.8 trillion rubles) and deposits (33.3%, or 44.1 trillion rubles).

The decrease in the volume of foreign currency cash in quarterly dynamics slowed down: in the fourth quarter of 2022 it decreased by 69.5 billion rubles, before that the figure had been growing, including to record levels in the first quarter of 2022 (it amounted to 1.2 trillion rubles). There is no breakdown by types of currencies in the statistics.

According to the Central Bank, as of May 1, 2023, 13% of funds in foreign currency accounts and deposits of retail clients were in “non-toxic” currencies, while 87% were in “toxic” currencies.
