The organizers of the world championship in rowing and canoeing in Duisburg, Germany, refused to invite Russian and Belarusian athletes, despite the admission from the international federation, TASS reports with reference to the head coach of the Russian national team Alexander Kostoglod.
“In June, we received letters from the Italian side, where the world championship was held under 19 and 23, and from the German side, where the adult world championship will be held. They report that Russian and Belarusian athletes cannot take part in these tournaments due to the fact that the Italians and Germans cannot provide security, Kostoglod said. “Therefore, we will not receive invitations to these competitions.”
The International Canoeing Federation (ICF) at the end of April decided to allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in international competitions in a neutral status. Rules and deadlines for the return of athletes will be established by an independent commission. The ability of athletes to compete must also be confirmed by the International Doping Testing Agency (ITA).
