President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko signed a law that makes it possible to ban the activities of foreign media in the country if a foreign state takes “unfriendly actions” against the Belarusian media.
The document expands the list of grounds for canceling the state registration of mass media and blocking Internet resources and online publications. The law is also intended to define the features of the work of news aggregators and the requirements for their owners, writes RBC.
The press service of Lukashenka states that the law is aimed at “improving the mechanisms for protecting national interests in the media sphere” and expanding the tools to respond to “unfriendly actions” against Belarus.
The list of unfriendly countries was approved by the Belarusian authorities in the spring of 2022 against the backdrop of Western sanctions against Moscow and Minsk due to hostilities in Ukraine. The list includes the states of the European Union, the USA, Great Britain, Canada, Norway and others.
