The participants in the extraordinary session of the UNESCO General Conference adopted a resolution on the return of the United States to the organization on the conditions proposed by Washington for the gradual repayment of the debt, TASS reports.
A total of 142 countries voted. The proposed draft resolution was supported by 132 delegations, 10 countries opposed. Another 15 countries abstained. A majority of 95 votes was enough to adopt a resolution, the chairman of the session emphasized.
According to the text of the adopted resolution, the failure of the United States to pay its contributions in the past occurred due to circumstances beyond their control.
If the return of Washington can be formalized before July 31, its delegates will be able to be elected to the Executive Council and participate in all voting until the 43rd session of the UNESCO General Conference. Also, given the size of the US debt, it was decided to suspend a number of provisions of the internal regulations of the General Conference.
The United States stopped planning contributions to UNESCO in 2011 in protest against the admission of Palestine into the ranks of the organization. At the end of 2018, the United States officially withdrew from the organization.
