The European Union intends to maintain sanctions against Iranian ballistic missiles. This was reported by Reuters, citing four sources.
According to media reports, there are three reasons why the EU made such a decision. Among them are the possible use by Russia of Iranian drones in Ukraine, the possibility of delivering Iranian missiles to Russia and the violation of the terms of the nuclear deal by Iran, Kommersant quotes.
The publication, citing an unnamed Western diplomat, notes that “the Iranians were told clearly, and now the question is what retaliatory steps, if any, they can take, and anticipate this.”
Note that the sanctions against Iran will expire in October 2023.
Last year, the US and the EU accused Iran of supplying Russian drones for use during a military operation in Ukraine. Moscow denied the information about the purchase of the UAV. Iran said it supplied drones to Russia “in small numbers” even before the start of the special operation.
Recall that in 2015, Britain, Germany, China, Russia, the United States, France and Iran signed a nuclear deal, according to which Western countries were to lift sanctions against Iran in exchange for limiting its nuclear program. In May 2018, the US announced its withdrawal from the JCPOA. In response, Iran resumed nuclear testing.
