The National Commission of Ukraine on State Language Standards has made a recommendation to rename the city of Zaporozhye, follows from the decision published on the commission’s website.
The name was included in the list of those that “may not correspond to the lexical norms of the Ukrainian language or relate to Russian imperial politics.” The document does not specify what exactly the discrepancy is. The current name of the city has been since 1921, before that it was called Aleksandrovsk.
The commission gave local authorities six months to either substantiate the expediency of retaining the name Zaporozhye or propose a new one. If this is not done, the issue will be considered by the Verkhovna Rada by decision of the commission.
In total, the commission’s recommendations suggest renaming more than 1,400 settlements. Among the names that should be changed only in the Zaporozhye region are Krasnoye Pole, Traktornoye, Trudovik, Fabrichnoye, Avangard, Yasnaya Polyana, Moskovka, Tambovka, and others. The Commission submitted lists for each region.
The document notes that the decision was made “in pursuance of the law of Ukraine” On the condemnation and prohibition of propaganda of Russian imperial policy in Ukraine and the decolonization of toponymy “”.
