Rain affects several sectors of Cuenca this Monday, November 29

Again the strong storm wreaks havoc in several sectors of Cuenca, on the afternoon of this Monday, November 29.

Due to the heavy downpour that fell between 2:00 pm and 3:00 pm today, part of the Avenida de las Américas was filled with water, which covered the tram rails; consequently, the service was paralyzed for more than 20 minutes. Likewise, in other areas of the Azuayan capital hail fell.

Among the flooded sectors are Santa María, La Libertad and Feria Libre. In the last area, although no material damage was reported, the employees of the Municipal Potable Water Company (Etapa) and the Firefighters came quickly to remove the water in the shortest possible time to the nearest sewer. All while the tram remained parked at the station, heading south-north.

But in other areas, such as Avenida 24 de Mayo and the University of Azuay sector, problems were also reported. There, the intense rain caused the overflow of the Yanuncay River, which caused the formation of a lagoon on the pavement. Several small cars were stranded.

Rafael Pintado, a neighbor of the San Miguel de Putuzhi sector, entrance to Buenos Aires de Sayausí, said that in this place there were dozens of families affected due to the damming. And even though the rain was over by 4:00 p.m., the neighbors were still drawing the water.

The neighbor said that the sewer pipes are too narrow and can no longer support the flow of rainwater. This was evidenced here by the raised manhole cover, as the force of the water lifted it.

That is why they decided on their own to close the traffic until they can vent everything.

From the ECU-911 alerts were generated in the Sayausí parish, and so far the damages have not been quantified.

A slab that served as a bridge collapsed in the San Miguel de Sayausí sector, in eastern Cuenca, said Martín Lucero, president of the Sayausí parish GAD.

Likewise, the mayor of Cuenca, Pedro Palacios, reported the overflow of a stream in the Tanques de Agua Potable neighborhood, due to the strong storm

“There is dragging material, however, there is no flooding in the homes,” he said, adding that Public Works personnel are working on cleaning the road. (I)
