Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said he refused to supply Kyiv with Hawkei armored vehicles and Bushmaster armored personnel carriers because they “won’t help Ukrainian soldiers on the battlefield,” TASS reports.

“They have [украинских военных] there are already 90 Bushmasters. As for the Hawkei armored vehicles, according to the recommendations of the Ministry of Defense [Австралии] They <…> are not suitable, and there are a number of reasons why they will not provide assistance to Ukraine,” Albanese said. He also noted that, despite the requests, it is not worth sending “equipment that will not provide the best result” to the battlefield.

Australian Minister of Defense Richard Marles also expressed a similar opinion. According to him, Canberra, together with Kiev, assessed “what kind of assistance can change the situation for the better, <…> and understanding this formed the basis of the aid package.”

Marles noted that the transfer of Hawkei armored vehicles, previously requested by Ukraine from Australia, “was fraught with certain problems.” He stressed that the Australian authorities “have already delivered a fairly significant number of Bushmaster armored personnel carriers to Ukraine” and, as part of the new assistance package, provided for other “equipment that can make a difference.”
