“Commando” is an American sensational film by Mark L. Lester from 1985. The main role of Colonel John Matrix was played in the production. The film about a man who wants to recover his kidnapped daughter at all costs is now considered a classic of the 1980s. Next to “Rambo II” with Sylvester Stallone in the cast, “Commando” holds the record for the intensity of violence on the screen and the number of deaths during the course of a film.
Sylvester Stallone spoiled the ending of “Commando”, although he didn’t even play there? So says the screenwriter
Although the two actors mentioned privately quite liked each other, in the professional field they competed for the title of the best action movie hero of those years. Years later, each of them is still valued by crowds of fans around the world, and productions with actors, despite the passage of time and changes in the approach to filmmaking, delight subsequent generations.
Screenwriter Steven E. de Souza told RadioTimes a bit about the backstage of “Komando”. He admitted that if “Rambo” had not been such a hit at the time, the script of the picture with Schwarzenegger would have been constructed a little differently. “Sylvester Stallone is to blame for spoiling the ending of ‘Commando’,” the screenwriter said in an interview.
“Director Mark L. Lester saw a segment of Rambo II and said Stallone was killing a lot of people there. He decided there had to be more dead bodies in Commando,” recalls Steven E. de Souza. To realize the director’s new vision and to shoot an epic scene where an entire army is defeated, the budget had to be exceeded. “It wasn’t in the script,” he says.
De Souza had 24 hours to write a new finale
The budget, however, was not made of rubber. Spending more money on one scene was bound to make another one suffer. In the case of “Komando” it was the ending. Originally in the script, the Matrix’s duel with Bennett (John’s former associate, in the film his greatest enemy) was to take place on a private island. Whoever saw the film knows that the gentlemen ended up in the basement, which was located in the basement of the Fox recording studio.
The scene where Bennett is impaled by a pipe is a fan favorite today, but who knows how it would fare in the open. Maybe better? De Souza was given 24 hours to come up with a new, cheaper final.
Many years ago, there were rumors in the media that a remake of “Komando” was being worked on. David Ayer, the co-creator of “Fast and the Furious” from 2001 and “Training Day”, was to be the author of the script and director. The case, however, died down for years, and De Souza believes that a remake will not be made, because it will be extremely difficult for potential creators to replace Schwarzenegger. “They need a unique character. The Rock could be suitable, but he will not want to take part in it” – predicts the screenwriter of “Komando”.
