Representatives of the G7 camps over the weekend discussed options for dealing with a possible destabilization of the situation in Russia, including issues of nuclear arms control, the Financial Times writes, citing sources.
According to the newspaper, the emergency meeting was organized against the backdrop of the actions of the founder of Wagner PMC Yevgeny Prigozhin, who announced on June 24 a “march of justice” to Moscow. Discussions mostly centered on the potential Wagnerians gaining control of Russian nuclear weapons, sources told the FT.
One of the newspaper’s interlocutors noted that the G7 needed contingency plans. At the same time, a FT source familiar with the content of a similar meeting of EU foreign ministers said that Europe as a whole did not support Prigozhin’s actions and opposed a possible “civil war” in Russia.
In addition, the publication points out, some Western countries, including members of the G7, spoke negatively about possible attempts by Ukraine to take advantage of the situation to carry out new sabotage in order to undermine stability in Russia.
