Russian ballet dancer Sergei Polunin has faced condemnation for performing in Uzbekistan to Shaman’s “Let’s Get Up,” a song dedicated to fallen Russian soldiers.

According to Forbes, as part of a performance in Tashkent, he decided to perform a solo in military uniform to a fragment of the song “Let’s get up” by the musician Shaman about Russian soldiers. After the performance, the artist said, employees of the Fund for the Development of Culture and Art of Uzbekistan rudely reprimanded him for this and refused to pay per diem to his team for the show. The ballet dancer said that he intends to apply to the Russian consulate in Uzbekistan with a request to look into the situation.

Later, representatives of the press service of the Fund for the Development of Culture and Art of Uzbekistan noted that by performing to the song “Let’s get up”, he violated the agreements with the organizers of the show.

“Communication with Polunin and his group on the part of the fund staff took place in an exceptionally respectful and correct manner, for which Polunin personally expressed his gratitude to the fund staff. Against this background, Polunin’s statement … is bewildering and does not correspond to reality, ”RIA Novosti quotes a statement from representatives of the fund, who also noted that the issue of per diem payments is regulated by the artist’s agent, and not by the organization.

The Fund, according to the agency, also noted that since the artist’s performance did not go according to the approved program posted on the official website, the incident became “a violation by Polunin of mutual agreements.” According to the Uzbek news site Gazeta.uz, Sergei Polunin was originally supposed to perform to the song Take Me To Church by Irish musician Hozier.
