The events of recent days in the Russian Federation around the Wagner PMC are an internal Russian affair. This statement was made on CNN by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken.
When asked whether the latest events, according to the American authorities, could pose a threat to the Russian authorities, Blinken said that he did not want to “speculate” on this topic.
“Firstly, this is an internal affair of Russia,” he stressed.
Recall that earlier the headquarters of the Southern Military District in Rostov-on-Don was captured by the PMC Wagner. This happened against the backdrop of statements by Yevgeny Prigozhin about allegedly inflicted by the Russian Armed Forces missile and bomb attacks on PMC camps – this, however, was denied by both the Ministry of Defense and the FSB. As a result, a criminal case was opened against Prigozhin for organizing an armed rebellion. In turn, Russian President Vladimir Putin called the actions of the “Wagnerites” a criminal adventure.
The day before, the press service of the President of Belarus reported that Alexander Lukashenko held talks with Prigozhin and he accepted his proposal to stop the Wagner movement in Russia and take further steps to de-escalate. As Putin’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov stated after that, Prigozhin would leave for Belarus, and the criminal case would be dropped.
