The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has decided to withdraw recognition from the International Boxing Association (IBA). Voting on this issue took place on Thursday at the IOC session, TASS reports.
70 people took part in the voting. The decision was supported by 69 people, one voted against. Also, the IOC session spoke in favor of keeping boxing in the program of the Summer Olympic Games in Paris in 2024.
In 2019, the IOC temporarily withdrew its recognition status from the IBA due to the organization’s financial and management crisis. The committee demanded reforms from the international federation and removed it from organizing a boxing tournament at the Tokyo Olympics, which took place in 2021. Subsequently, the IOC repeatedly expressed doubts about the transparency of the management of the IBA.
Since the end of 2020, the IBA has been headed by Russian Umar Kremlev. The International Federation refused to follow the recommendations of the IOC on restrictions on the participation of athletes from Russia and Belarus in connection with the events in Ukraine, boxers from both countries compete in its tournaments without any restrictions. The boxing federations of the United States, Great Britain, Sweden, Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands and the Philippines withdrew from the IBA in protest and announced their intention to create a new international organization called World Boxing.
