They set him up on a date and he fell in love with the one who opened the door. Thousands of fans mourn him to this day

It was him who created Spider-Man, in his teenage years he managed the Marvel Comics brand, which is now known all over the world, wrote the stories he wanted to read and made comic books reading not only for children. Stan Lee passed away in 2018 at the age of 96. He will be remembered as an immortal pop culture icon thanks to his works.

On June 16, a documentary film about Stan Lee’s colorful life filled with superheroes appeared on the Disney+ streaming platform. Director David Gelb produced a production that focused on the professional activity of one of the most popular comic book creators in the world, but it also included some surprising tidbits from the private life of the honorary president of Comics.

It wasn’t her he had an appointment with. He fell in love with the one who opened the door for him

The film tells the story of Lee meeting his wife, Joan Boocock, whom he married in 1947. As it turns out, he almost missed meeting the partner with whom he spent the rest of his life. The comic creator’s cousin worked in the hat industry. One day, he told Stan that he knew a cute hat model he needed to meet and arranged for the writer to go on a date with a certain Betty.

Lee went to the meeting with a coat casually thrown over one shoulder. However, the door to the establishment was opened to him by the main model who also worked there. As Joan recalls, the first words Stan Lee said to her clearly indicated that he was smitten with her. “Hello, I think I’m falling in love with you,” he announced, and he did just that.

Stan Lee – Documentary about the late Marvel Comics Creator now on Disney+

The creator of the comics emphasized that he was enchanted by Joan’s British accent and her unusual beauty. “It was love at first sight,” says Stan Lee in the documentary. The couple’s feeling lasted for many years. In 1950, their daughter Joan C. was born, three years later Jan Lee was born, but she died as a child.

Shortly after the premiere, the documentary was criticized by the son of Jack Kirby, one of Marvel’s most important cartoonists, with whom Stan Lee had worked for years. Like his father, the younger Kirby accuses Stan Lee of usurping his father’s ideas and merits. In the film, the conflict between the creators is briefly outlined, but the narration, which is conducted by Stan Lee himself throughout the documentary, clearly indicates that the story will not be the most objective and will be presented as the creator, who died in 2018, remembered it.
