La Mama Negra returned to the streets of Latacunga with religious fervor

The narrow streets of Latacunga returned this morning to be filled with colors and dancers. Dozens of comparsas covered them in honor of the Black Mama.

This traditional celebration is resumed after two years of pandemic. This month’s festival is held in homage and gratitude to the Virgen de la Merced, a religious dedication that is remembered in September.

Dressed in bright and colorful outfits, men, women and children joined the festivities and parades.

The Association of Donors and Devotees estimated that this year 70 troupes would participate in the tours, which began early this Friday.

This September 25, the celebrations will continue in Latacunga.

The September parade is a prelude to the larger celebration of the Mama Negra, who walks with her traditional characters. The difference of the November activities is that the characters come out with their faces painted and not with masks, as in September.

Thursday night was the Show artistic in the Jocha del Abanderado 2022. Dozens of Latacungueños attended the event in the downtown area of ​​the city. The Sonora Dinamita was one of the attractions of this Show.

The catchy rhythm of the band led hundreds to set up their dance floor in the square, in front of the stage. There were fireworks and parades. (YO)
