WesternRus, which provided Russian cinemas with access to showing foreign films, has decided to suspend its activities due to the high level of piracy. As ProfiCinema writes, the corresponding message appeared in the closed Telegram channel of the company.

The delivery was carried out with the help of Telegram: the company handed over the keys for the weekly show to the exhibitors, the publication notes.

The company notes that this decision was influenced by a whole range of reasons: re-shooting of releases and their unauthorized distribution, which was carried out by domestic cinemas and third-party companies, stand out as the basis. Pirates also pay attention to the low payback of releases and the low cost of selling a key for 1 room.

An anonymous source in the cinema community confirmed to the publication that the struggle of pirates for the Russian film market has been going on for more than one month. For example, the domestic dubbing studio Red Head Sound was in serious competition with a Kazakh company, and their first step was dumping. WesternRus later also offered a flexible system of discounts for regular customers, but, the newspaper writes, could not stand the competition.

Recall that after the start of the CBO, the largest Hollywood copyright holders, in particular, Universal, Disney, Sony, Warner, suspended their work in the Russian Federation and began to revoke licenses to show their films. Thus, many cinemas have introduced a “pre-screening” mechanism, and some are trying to attract the audience with new content.
