People’s Artist of Russia director Alexei Uchitel believes that the country should return to the nomination of domestic films for the Oscar film award, TASS reports. “We have films that we need to put forward this year and try to do it,” he said on the sidelines of SPIEF.
According to Teacher, “it’s not only politics, it’s an art” and people who make films “shouldn’t suffer.” He stressed that cooperation in the film industry “helps to understand each other and build relationships.”
The director recalled that the decision not to nominate a Russian film for an American award in 2022 was made by the Presidium of the National Film Academy without the participation of members of the Russian Oscar Committee. Last October, Teacher left the committee, but in a conversation with the agency, he admitted that he could join the organization again: “We left [из комитета]but this does not mean that we have left it forever.
Recall that the Russian Oscar Committee also left its chairman, director Pavel Chukhrai, calling the decision of the National Academy “illegal”. His example was followed by Nikolai Dostal, Andrey Zvyagintsev, Vladimir Kott, Sergei Bodrov Sr. and Vera Storozheva.
