Israeli Defense Ministers Yoav Gallant and Ukraine Alexei Reznikov will hold telephone conversations, Axios reports, citing sources in the Israeli Defense Ministry. It is noted that this will be the first telephone conversation between the heads of departments since Gallant took office more than five months ago.
According to the portal, the call will take place at the request of US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin. Axios notes that the Pentagon has been insisting for several months that Israel increase aid to Ukraine.
Prior to this, Gallant and Reznikov discussed assistance to Ukraine at a meeting of NATO defense ministers on June 15-16 in Brussels. Israel refused to provide Ukraine with any lethal weapons. A senior Israeli defense official told the publication that the country’s authorities are “ready to provide humanitarian and defensive assistance,” but “lethal weapons are where Israel ‘draws the line’.”
Recall that in May, Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen said that Israel supports Ukraine’s position in its conflict with Russia, but cannot ignore Moscow’s influence in the Middle East.
