The system for admitting Russians to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris has been determined. The rules were prepared by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), details are provided by the All Sport agency.
It is reported that the IOC will take as a basis the conditions for the formation of a “refugee team”. Russian athletes will be able to compete under the flag of the IOC and under the name “Neutral Athletes”. However, athletes must apply in person. In addition, they will have the opportunity to perform exclusively in the individual types of the program.
It is specified that if the IOC approves the athlete’s application, he will be obliged to stop participating in national tournaments.
It is planned that decisions on the process of participation of Russians in the Games will be officially adopted at a meeting of the IOC Executive Committee, which will be held on June 20–22, and at an extraordinary session of the organization on June 22.
Recall that at the end of February 2022, the IOC recommended not to allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in any competitions. The basic principles have been retained only by the International Boxing Association. In some sports, the Russians have the opportunity in a neutral status – with a number of restrictions. So, the IOC forbids Russians who supported the SVO, are related to the sports clubs of the Russian army or law enforcement agencies to compete. In addition, the International Weightlifting Federation, the World Taekwondo Federation, the Wimbledon Grand Slam tennis tournament require neutral Russian athletes who have passed the IOC filter to sign special statements, which, in particular, express support for Ukraine and / or condemn the SVO.
