Many US NATO allies are pressuring US President Joe Biden to support Ukraine’s early entry into the North Atlantic Alliance, reports The New York Times.

First of all, we are talking about countries bordering Russia, the newspaper notes. On the eve of the NATO summit, which will be held in Vilnius in July, they want to show that they are firmly committed to the idea of Kyiv joining the bloc. Some states are calling for a clear timetable for this, but only after the end of the armed conflict between Ukraine and Russia, Biden administration officials told the NYT.

One official called the issue of Ukraine’s accession to NATO an “all-consuming discussion” both in Europe and among members of the US administration. The publication adds that Biden himself treats this topic with caution, because he does not want to “draw NATO into a direct war with Moscow.” Of all the allies in the bloc, only Germany completely sided with Biden, although other NATO members also have doubts about Kyiv’s readiness to join the alliance and the risks of a direct conflict with Moscow.

According to the NYT, the United States can offer Ukraine a security model similar to the Israeli one, which does not imply immediate entry into the bloc. According to the interlocutors of the publication, the United States thus wants to make it clear to the Russian side that Kyiv will receive military assistance for many years to come. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in turn, believes that only the country’s membership in NATO can guarantee Kyiv’s security.
