The United States plans to supply Ukraine with tank shells with depleted uranium. The idea was considered in the White House for several weeks, The Wall Street Journal writes, citing US officials.
It is planned to equip Abrams tanks with shells, which are also planned to be sent to Ukraine, media writes.
The publication notes that the White House agreed to approve the transfer of shells after a series of debates about what ammunition should be equipped with tanks that the United States will transfer to Ukraine. There are no more obstacles to the approval of the supply of this type of ammunition, the newspaper emphasizes. The media also writes that several officials in the White House are concerned that due to the transfer of these shells, Washington will be criticized because such weapons pose a danger to human health and the environment.
Earlier, the UK announced plans to send depleted uranium shells to Ukraine. In response, the Russian Defense Ministry stated that the use of such ammunition would cause irreparable harm to the health of the Ukrainian military and civilians.
The day before, it was reported that Ukraine also called on the allies to provide it with Western-style combat aircraft. So far, no country has announced their transfer to Kyiv. This topic will be discussed, among other things, during a meeting in the Ramstein format with teams from the ministries of defense of the Netherlands, Denmark, the United States and other countries on June 15.
