Every winter, the agricultural sector faces crop losses due to floods, river overflows and pests. The consequences of nature could be mitigated to some extent through prevention, but little or nothing is being done. Today, the announcement of the atmospheric phenomenon El Niño becomes a threat against which we must act quickly.
On June 9, in the Letters to the Director segment of this newspaper, Mauro Erazo Vélez called on the agricultural sector to unite to call candidates for the early elections on August 20, 2023 to present a program aimed at the defense of the countryside, rurality, social security; protection of water and life, care for the environment of sustainable agriculture.
“The farmer lives from day to day, he doesn’t have to save… he will be less able to insure his crops”, but due to the threat of the El Niño phenomenon, policy contracting is increasing
He also mentions other aspects such as security, health, education and the fight against drug trafficking and corruption which are, at least, present in the applicant’s discourse. It is timely that the public with all fairness demands attention for neglected sectors, in this case in the field of agriculture.
And how nice that voices dedicated to production are beginning to be raised! Not only in demand for those who want to come to power, but also for those who currently hold it and must work on prevention before the announced El Niño phenomenon in the countryside, as well as in urban sectors.
The concern of the agricultural sector is visible in the insurance publication. Agricultural insurance contracting increased 107.8% in Ecuador between January and April this year compared to the same period in 2022. Although interest in these products has existed since 2017, there is still a long way to go due to the costs they represent for small farmers, experts recommend the association to access insurance.
It encourages the interest of the private agricultural sector in damage prevention, and the same concern is expected from the state side and action to contain the effects that will result in an even greater blow to the economy. (OR)
