The number of bird strikes in Russia in January-May increased by 82% compared to the same period last year. This is stated in a letter from the head of the Federal Air Transport Agency, Alexander Neradko, excerpts are cited by RBC.
So, as of May 31, 31 such incidents were registered in civil aviation against 17 as of May 31, 2022. Collisions resulted in aircraft damage. As examples, the letter cites collisions with a flock of birds of an Airbus A321neo aircraft of the Severo-Zapad airline when landing at Domodedovo airport on April 20 and a Superjet 100 aircraft of Rossiya airline when landing in Nizhny Novgorod on April 27.
Also, in the first five months of 2023, the number of reports of aircraft collisions with birds that did not lead to aircraft damage increased by 7%, to 224 cases.
Neradko stressed that the incidents may indicate shortcomings in the work of airports and other organizations involved in providing flights. He recommended, among other things, airline managers to conduct training sessions with aircraft crews on actions in difficult ornithological conditions.
