Poland was the operational logistics center for the sabotage group that blew up the Nord Stream pipelines, follows from the evidence that appeared at the German Federal Criminal Police Office, The Wall Street Journal reports, citing sources familiar with the investigation.
According to the publication, German investigators are inclined to believe that the Andromeda yacht was really involved in the incident: it sailed over every place where the explosion later occurred. According to new evidence, the yacht was rented through a Warsaw-based travel agency that may be part of a network of “Krainian shell companies suspected of links to Ukrainian intelligence.” The white van used by the saboteurs, seen in a German port, had Polish license plates.
The newspaper notes that the Polish authorities were not made aware of the ongoing investigation into the movements of the Andromeda and its crew, they learned about it from media materials. This is an unusual situation for relations between the two countries, the WSJ draws attention, since Berlin and Warsaw have common legal instruments for conducting cross-border investigations. After the news about Andromeda appeared, the Polish authorities held a meeting with representatives of Germany.
The German Prosecutor General’s Office declined to comment on whether an investigation was conducted against Poland or whether investigators turned to Warsaw for help. Interlocutors familiar with the investigation noted the lack of evidence of the involvement of the Polish government in the explosions.
