Due to the destruction of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station (HPP), the entire ecosystem of the Dnieper floodplain will be greatly damaged, and an ecological disaster may occur. This was stated by the expert of the Russian Academy of Sciences, oceanologist, hydrophysicist Sergei Stanichny, TASS reports.
According to him, “huge volumes of water that have moved to the Black Sea will wash away dirt and anything else, and will carry dirt into the Dnieper-Bug estuary.” “This will lead to an ecological disaster. The floodplain of the Dnieper will be flooded. This is a very strong blow to the ecosystem,” added Stanichny.
He did not rule out that problems with water supply would affect cities on opposite sides of the Kakhovka reservoir.
At the same time, the mayor of Novaya Kakhovka, Vladimir Leontyev, said that the national park was flooded due to the destruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station, thousands of animals died. “The scale of the catastrophe is huge,” he added on the air of the Russia 24 TV channel, stressing that experts have yet to analyze what kind of damage was caused to the park as a result of flooding of the territory after a breakthrough at the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station.
Recall that the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station collapsed on June 6. Russia and Ukraine blame each other for what happened. In the Russian Federation, a case has been initiated under the article “a terrorist attack committed by a group of persons by prior agreement and causing significant property damage and other grave consequences.”
