Poisoned by “Mr. Cider” Russians suffered because of the content of methyl alcohol in the drink. As narcologist Daniil Petrov told Lente.ru, methyl alcohol is an extremely dangerous and strong poison, and even if a person survives after poisoning, the consequences for him will be irreversible.
The expert clarified that 10 ml of this liquid is enough to get poisoned, and 30 lead to death.
At the same time, he pointed out that the symptoms of a mild form of methanol poisoning are similar to a hangover: general weakness, chills, nausea, and headache. In more serious poisoning, the substance oxidizes to formaldehyde and causes visual impairment, mainly color, and subsequently temporary blindness. In addition, the cardiovascular system, nervous system, and liver suffer.
According to the expert, even after recovery and therapy, pathological changes in the nervous system are inevitable. Incurable liver failure is not excluded. Petrov added that it is impossible to distinguish methanol by appearance or smell in an alcoholic beverage, since it is identical to ethyl alcohol.
The specialist advised at the first symptoms of methanol poisoning, while the doctors are on the road, to take ordinary vodka. But, he stressed, when the first suspicions of methanol poisoning appear, it is necessary to urgently call doctors and be hospitalized in order to reduce the toxic effect of the substance.
