The reason for the expansion of NATO is the actions of the Russian Federation in Ukraine. This was stated by British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace at the Shangri-La security conference in Singapore, TASS quotes him.
According to Wallace, Moscow’s policy allegedly forced the West “to rethink the architecture of Euro-Atlantic security and pushed even more countries to ensure collective security under the auspices of NATO.”
At the same time, the minister acknowledged that the current system of international law was formed with the participation of Moscow. “The system that includes the UN Charter is the system that we, including together with Russia, created after the end of World War II. This is the system we all fought for together,” Wallace added.
Earlier, he said that Ukraine will not be able to join NATO in the near future. Wallace urged NATO and the EU not to over-promise candidates like Kyiv, the Washington Post quoted him as saying. At the same time, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg noted that the alliance considers Ukraine’s entry to be real. At the same time, Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky acknowledged that Ukraine would not become a NATO member until the end of the conflict, but emphasized that he would like the support of partners in the form of an invitation to the alliance today.
