The United States is ready to negotiate nuclear arms control with Russia. AP writes about it.
According to media reports, the proposal will be voiced by US national security adviser Jake Sullivan, who is scheduled to address the Washington Arms Control Association on June 2.
At the same time, the United States is ready for dialogue without preconditions on the creation of such a new system “concerning nuclear risks,” the publications write.
We can talk about creating a new nuclear arms control system that could operate after the expiration of the Treaty on Measures for the Further Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms (START, or START-3) in 2026, The Washington Post points out.
It is also noted that the United States is ready to continue to comply with the terms of the START if Russia does the same.
Earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated that a dialogue with Washington on nuclear weapons is possible only on a parity basis and taking into account Moscow’s interests.
Recall that the START-3 treaty replaced the treaty that was signed in 1991. The new agreement was signed by Dmitry Medvedev and Barack Obama in 2010 and expires in 2026. In February, Russia suspended participation in the agreement, explaining this by the desire of the United States and NATO to inflict a “strategic defeat” and the refusal of Moscow to inspect American facilities under the agreement. The US State Department called Russia’s decision irresponsible.
