Guilds march for budget for general and higher education; Government denies that there is less money allocated

The Ministry of Education denied a reduction in the budget. It states that compared to 2021, there is an increase of 17%.

A massive march was held this Thursday in defense of budget for education.

Social unions gathered in the square Indo-America, outside the Central University, in the north center of the city and walked to the historic center of Quito.

According to Federation of University Students, there’s a $ 117 million cut higher education, which has an impact on the offer of places, infrastructure and research and in the case of Initial education, in basic education and high school, the cut extends to $ 950 million, indicated Isabel Vargas, president of the National Union of Educators (UNE).

The Assembly resolved to observe the 2022 budget proforma

The Minister of Education, María Brown Pérez, denied a budget cut.

For general education, Brown stated that there is a 17% increase with respect to the 2021 codified budget. For this year he explained -in a radio interview- the budget reaches $ 2.905 million and it increases to $ 3,410 million in the budget proforma.

In his opinion, the participation of high school students in the march was by solidarity or misinformation.

On your Twitter account, Alejandro Ribadeneira, Secretary of Higher Education, pointed out that the university budget will not be reduced but that it will be increased on $ 25 million by 2022, with which the gratuity and quality of higher education will be guaranteed.
