Neither the EU nor Turkey wants the country’s entry into the European Union anymore, said the head of the leading faction of the European Parliament – the European People’s Party (EPP) – Manfred Weber in an interview with WAZ.
“Recent years have shown that a close partnership is important, but no one else wants Turkey’s full membership in the EU, neither Turkey nor the EU,” Weber said, commenting on the future of cooperation between Ankara and Brussels after the victory of the incumbent President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
In this regard, the MEP called for stopping negotiations with Ankara on EU membership.
At the same time, Weber added that the EU is open to further cooperation with its immediate neighbors. “We need cooperation on the issue of achieving peace between Ukraine and Russia, in migration policy, economic modernization and the Cyprus issue,” he stressed, noting that Ankara must approve Sweden’s entry into NATO.
We will remind, on the eve of Erdogan won the second round of the presidential election. He received 51.91% of the vote, while his rival Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu won 48.09%.
