Tens of thousands of protesters took to downtown Tel Aviv to rally against the judicial reform of the government of Benjamin Netanyahu. According to RIA Novosti, according to the estimates of the organizers, about 230 thousand people took part in today’s actions.
In Tel Aviv, a protest action gathered about 80 thousand activists.
Another protest took place a few days after the Knesset approved the state budget for 2023-2024. As expected, this should ensure stability within the ruling coalition led by Netanyahu for the next 18 months. After the approval of the budget, the prime minister said that the judicial reform, which had caused a huge public outcry, would return to the agenda of Israeli political reality.
Recall that mass protests in Israel against judicial reform have been going on for the 21st week in a row. Critics of judicial reform fear that it will limit the influence of the supreme court on the process of passing basic laws, allow parliamentarians to challenge decisions of this court and give the government control over the procedure for appointing judges.
At the end of March, the prime minister announced the suspension of the legislative process on judicial reform until the summer session of the Knesset. This was done to negotiate and reach a compromise with opponents.
