The National Commission for State Regulation in the Spheres of Energy and Utilities of Ukraine has officially proposed to the government to double the price of electricity for household consumers. According to RIA Novosti, a corresponding letter from the head of the NEURC Ruslan Kaydash was sent to the Ministry of Energy.
“NEURC proposes to amend the provision on imposing special obligations to ensure the availability of electricity for household consumers from June 1 with the introduction of the first stage of adjusting prices for electricity and using a single price without differentiation by consumption volumes at the level of 2.88 hryvnia per kWh” , – quotes the publication “Energoreforma” the text of the letter.
The authors of the initiative believe that such changes will improve the financial performance of the state-owned companies Energoatom and Ukrhydroenergo.
According to a government source cited by the portal, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine is likely to support this proposal in the near future.
The increase in electricity tariffs was announced by the Ukrainian Ministry of Energy at the end of April. As local media wrote with reference to the calculations of the NEURC, if the tariffs do not change, then almost 150 billion hryvnias will have to be compensated from the state budget.
Now residents of Ukraine pay for electricity at 1.44 hryvnias (3.08 rubles) per kilowatt-hour if they consume less than 250 kilowatt-hours per month, and 1.68 hryvnias (3.59 rubles) if they consume more.
