Private Vladimir Konstantinov received five years in a penal colony for evading service, the press service of the Second Eastern District Military Court reports.

The Novosibirsk garrison military court found Konstantinov guilty of desertion. Punishment under this article provides for from five to 15 years in prison.

According to the case file, on December 29, 2022, Konstantinov “arbitrarily left the tent camp of the military unit stationed in the Novosibirsk Region and departed for the place of residence, where he began to live with his family, spending time at his own discretion, not wanting to continue military service.”

According to Kommersant, 25-year-old Konstantinov, who worked in the Novosibirsk region as a loader at an ice cream factory, was drafted into the army as part of a partial mobilization. He stayed in the camp for about three months and left it before sending the last group of fighters to the combat zone. According to the publication, the man climbed over the fence and called a taxi.

At the end of January, he was asked to come to the military investigation department of the Russian Investigative Committee for the Novosibirsk garrison. Konstantinov pleaded guilty to desertion and said during interrogation that “it is better to go to prison than to the front,” the newspaper notes.
