In the summer, many pets go to summer cottages – and the problem of ticks becomes relevant. Ekaterina Nikiforova, chief specialist of the department for organizing anti-epizootic and preventive measures of the Veterinary Administration of St. Petersburg, told how to protect animals from bites, writes Petersburg Diary.
As the specialist noted, ticks carry many diseases that are dangerous for the animal, which can be accompanied by fever and emaciation. The infection affects the nervous and musculoskeletal systems, the heart and blood vessels.
In order to avoid danger, it is necessary to treat the pet with special anti-tick preparations with a certain regularity. Before the first trip to nature, it is best to contact your veterinarian to help you choose the right drug and its dosage for a particular animal. For dogs that walk daily, treatment is a necessary procedure in the spring-summer season.
After walking with a pet, it must be carefully examined. If a tick is found on the body of an animal, it must be removed – even if the animal has been treated and the tick has died after being bitten, it cannot be left in the skin. If you do not have the skill to remove ticks, it is best to contact your veterinarian: simply trying to tear off an insect will cause its head to remain at the site of the bite. This can lead to an abscess.
