Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen is “seriously considered” for the post of new NATO Secretary General. According to TASS, this was reported by the European edition of the Politico newspaper, citing sources.
“It is indeed being seriously considered by a number of major allies,” the newspaper quoted one Central European official as saying.
According to the publication, the Prime Minister of Denmark approaches the role of NATO Secretary General in several ways. Firstly, the countries of the alliance would like to see a person who would be the head of government as the Secretary General. Secondly, since all the previous heads of NATO were men, the countries participating in the alliance are interested in a female candidate.
However, as one of the interlocutors of Politico emphasized, not all members of the alliance will support the appointment of a candidate from a Nordic country to the post of Secretary General. Previously, NATO was already headed by a representative of Denmark: from 2009 to 2014, the former prime minister of the country, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, was the secretary general of the alliance. In addition, Denmark’s defense spending has not yet reached 2% of GDP.
Also, Prime Minister of the Netherlands Mark Rutte, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, British Defense Minister Ben Wallace, and Estonian Prime Minister Kaya Kallas can also apply for the post of alliance secretary general.
NATO spokesperson Oana Lungescu told DPA on February 12 that Stoltenberg did not intend to extend his term of office, which expires in September 2023. As noted by the agency, he has already extended his term of office three times and has been serving as Secretary General for almost nine years. Subsequently, Stoltenberg himself confirmed that he intended to leave the post in the fall.
